Emergency lighting is regarded as a generic term of which there are a number of specific forms as described in the emergency lighting standards Ireland. The most common form of it is emergency escape lighting. The aim is to provide adequate illuminance to escape routes from buildings so that people can evacuate safely. This should be done even if there is a loss of power.

Through application of this Standard organisations engaged in the commissioning or maintenance of emergency lighting systems can enhance their reputation.  They will be providing their customers with confidence that their system meets best practice guidelines.
